Chapter 5: Minmax Lower Bounds

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Both questions ask about some form of optimality. The first one is about optimality of an estimator, whereas the second one is about optimality of a bound. The difficulty of these questions varies depending on whether we are looking for a positive or a negative answer. Indeed, a positive answer to these questions simply consists in finding a better proof for the estimator we have studied (question 1.) or simply finding a better estimator, together with a proof that it performs better (question 2.). A negative answer is much more arduous. For example, in question 2., it is a statement about all estimators. How can this be done? The answer lies in information theory (see [CT06] for a nice introduction). In this chapter, we will see how to give a negative answer to question 2. It will imply a negative answer to question 1.

Non-asymptotic confidence bounds for the optimal value of a stochastic program

We discuss a general approach to building non-asymptotic confidence bounds for stochastic optimization problems. Our principal contribution is the observation that a Sample Average Approximation of a problem supplies upper and lower bounds for the optimal value of the problem which are essentially better than the quality of the corresponding optimal solutions. At the same time, such bounds are ...

Stability of cross-validation and minmax-optimal number of folds

In this paper, we analyze the properties of cross-validation from the perspective of the stability, that is, the difference between the training error and the error of the selected model applied to any other finite sample. In both the i.i.d. and non-i.i.d. cases, we derive the upper bounds of the one-round and average test error, referred to as the one-round/convoluted Rademacher-bounds, to qua...

Approximability and Parameterized Complexity of Minmax Values

We consider approximating the minmax value of a multiplayer game in strategic form. Tightening recent bounds by Borgs et al., we observe that approximating the value with a precision of ǫ log n digits (for any constant ǫ > 0) is NP-hard, where n is the size of the game. On the other hand, approximating the value with a precision of c log log n digits (for any constant c ≥ 1) can be done in quas...

Chapter 5 Global Fano Method

In this chapter, we extend the techniques of Chapter 2.4 on Fano’s method (the local Fano method) to a more global construction. In particular, we show that, rather than constructing a local packing, choosing a scaling δ > 0, and then optimizing over this δ, it is actually, in many cases, possible to prove lower bounds on minimax error directly using packing and covering numbers (metric entropy...

Distributed Channel Allocation Algorithms for Wireless Sensor Networks

Interference between concurrent transmissions can cause severe performance degradation in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). While multiple channels available in WSN technology such as IEEE 802.15.4 can be exploited to mitigate interference, channel allocation can have a significant impact on the performance of multi-channel communication. This paper proposes a set of distributed algorithms for n...
